Something new I learned from the pages of Rip It Up: the band name Living Colour is in part a tribute to H.P. Lovecraft's "The Colour Out Of Space."

From the interview with Vernon Reid:

"I'm also a fan of H.P. Lovecraft[.] [...] the Cthulhu Mythos, which, in my mind, ultimately that would be a great subject for a black rock opera. The Cthulhu Mythos. Because H.P. Lovecraft was grappling with and struggling with his fear of black people and his fear of Africa. This is me just interpreting. Because you look at some of his early writing and he's clearly a racist, but if you read any parts of the Cthulhu Mythos, the very same Cthulhu is an Africa-sounding word and, well, that's a whole other interview. [...] [T]his is a totally novel interpretaton of Lovecraft, but he came up at a time in the 1920s when African exploration and African art was an obsession in America[.]"

Wow. Oh, wow.
thanks for sharing this interesting perspective.
