At the Bus Stop

The kids and I were waiting for the 57 bus this afternoon down by the Kwik-Way. A young woman asked whether I knew when the bus was coming and I told her that (according to NextBus) it should be here soon. We fell into a light and pleasant conversation and then she noticed who was sitting next to me, one on each side.

"Oh my gosh, are they twins?" she asked. I said yes. She looked back and forth between them a couple times.

"Boy and a girl?" she asked.

I took a deep breath that I hope she didn't notice. "Yes," I said, and smiled.

"Wow," she said. I shrugged, and just then the bus arrived.

With the extra ironic layer of the fact that I'd just spent the afternoon at preschool teacher conferences, where a major topic of conversation was how supported Simone feels in her gender choices and how we can coordinate to do our collective best on the subject.

; )

You rock as a parent.

(And as a person, but specifically in relation to this story..)
