On Jenna Jameson

So you may have heard that porn superstar Jenna Jameson endorsed Mitt Romney. The pull quote du jour is "When you’re rich, you want a Republican in office." Which, you know, is hard to argue with, at least. Reports maintain that she will be campaigning for him from this point onward.

And if you ask me, I think this is a really clever hoax. I think Jameson is pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

Look. Jameson may be blonde, and she may be a porn star, but all reports are that she is not dumb. She is media-savvy. She knows how to spin a story.

She knows exactly how that soundbite plays in Peoria.

She also knows exactly how a famous porn star offering to campaign for Romney plays, too. (Note that I cannot find a single bit of evidence to support the idea that she'll actually be campaigning for him.)

Notice also the context: she was asked backstage at an SF strip club by a CBS reporter. She didn't call a press conference. She didn't put out a press release. She was interrupted at work for a quote. So she gave good quote.

I could be wrong here. Porn stars also tend to have, er, non-mainstream takes on political issues. But I wouldn't bet the rent money on it, folks.

(Also perhaps worthy of note, perhaps not: Jameson has advocated that porn stars unionize; she also started the Adult Industry Assistance Fund (now apparently defunct) in 2004 to help fill the income gap for porn performers during an HIV-related industry work shutdown. The latter in particular impressed me as a "put your money where your mouth is" move. )

I like this theory.
