Reading Wednesday Meets Louise Philippe

That's more like it! Jean Valjean has made yet another miraculous escape, his closest one yet, and now we are into a massive digression about Louis Philippe, whom Victor Hugo admires as a person and, even, yes, as a monarch, considering he "all but abolished the death penalty" through copious pardons and all. Except that he remained a monarch and that's an intractable social problem. Sorry, Louis Philippe.
